Read this week's message from Father Don
Christmas greetings,
At Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, we hear these beautiful words from the prophet Isaiah:
“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness - on them light has shone.”
The deep darkness, I believe, partly refers to our human inability to see ourselves for who we truly are. Without divine illumination, our self-awareness is very limited and our self-image often flawed. If we rely upon the surrounding world to shape our self-understanding, we will under-value ourselves.
At Christmas we celebrate the birth of Jesus, the light who has come into the world to reveal God to man and to reveal man to himself. In his own person, Jesus shows us who we were created to be. He shines a light upon us so that we might be lifted up, encouraged, and empowered.
God created us for great things, for personal contentment and for cooperation with his saving work. Jesus reminds us that we are important, valuable and infinitely loved.
May this celebration of the Saviour’s birth, grant us a better understanding of ourselves and our place in God’s plan.
